The School of Art Design and Media is dedicated to advancing social application and frontier academic research, with a strong focus on interdisciplinary integration. Building on the university’s solid foundation in science and technology, it es the development of the creative industries. It has built a well-structured educational system and cultivated numerous outstanding professionals since launching its Industrial Design program in 1984.


Through the idea of “Science–Art Integration,” the School breaks down disciplinary boundaries and nurtures cross-disciplinary talent to meet the industry needs. It offers one program cluster in Design Studies with four tracks—Product Design, Visual Communication Design, Environmental Design, and Digital Media Art—as well as two engineering majors, Industrial Design and Landscape Architecture. It is authorized to confer master’s degrees in Design Studies, Industrial Design Engineering, Design, Landscape Planning and Design, and Landscape Architecture, along with a doctoral degree in Industrial Design. These undergraduate and graduate programs form a comprehensive educational system across Engineering and the Arts. Notably, Industrial Design and Digital Media Art have been recognized as National First-Class Undergraduate Program Construction Sites.


Pursuing “Industry–Education Integration,” the School aligns education with societal needs through a network of research institutes, including the Institute of Art and Design, the Institute of Tourism Planning and Convention & Exhibition Studies, the Institute of Advertising and Brand Culture, the Institute of Urban Morphology and Urban Culture, the Institute of Interactive Design and Service Innovation, the Yangtze River Delta Research Center for Green Design and Carbon Neutrality, the Research Center for Urban and Rural Cultural Heritage, the Research Center for Environmental Design, the Research and Practice Center for Participatory Community Planning, the Research Center for Brand Design and Innovation, and the Research Center for Cross-Media Intelligent Design.


The School fosters students’ holistic thinking and problem-solving skills by ing innovation and entrepreneurship. Faculty and students have earned numerous honors, including the Red Dot Design Award, the iF Design Award, and the First Prize in the National “Challenge Cup” Competition.


The School is a member of Cumulus—the International Association of Universities and Colleges of Art, Design and Media. It also serves as a platform university for the Shanghai Summit Discipline in Design, where it takes a leading role in product and brand innovation design.


The School has 75 faculty members, more than 800 undergraduate students, and over 370 master’s and doctoral students. It has established student exchange programs with a number of internationally renowned institutions, including the University of London, the University of Dundee, Brunel University London, Leibniz University Hannover, Chiba University, École Intuit Lab, Académie Charpentier, and École de Design Nantes Atlantique, thereby enabling students to expand their global perspectives and engage in cross-cultural collaboration.
