In 2022, the undergraduate programs in Industrial Design and Digital Media Art were both recognized as National First-Class Undergraduate Program Construction Sites.

In 2021, the second phase of the Shanghai Peak Discipline in Design (IV) was launched, and the School was awarded a major project of the National Social Science Fund.

In 2020, the School completed the construction and relocation to Chenyuan. With significantly improved teaching and research facilities, the School entered a new stage of development.

In 2019, faculty–student teams from the School won the First Prize in the National “Challenge Cup” Competition.

In 2017, SADMbecame part of the Shanghai Construction PlatformforPeakDiscipline in Design (IV), with Professor Cheng Jianxin appointed as Chief Scientist for the Product and Brand Innovation Design direction.

In 2015, the School officially joined Cumulus—the International Association of Universities and Colleges of Art, Design and Media. In the same year, with Ministry of Education approval, a new undergraduate program in Digital Media Art was launched, with the first students enrolled in the autumn.

In 2013, the Ministry of Education approved a new master’s program in Landscape Planning and Design, marking a further expansion of the School’s postgraduate education.

In 2012, with approval from the Ministry of Education, the School launched a new undergraduate program in Landscape Architecture. The School also participated in the 2011 Collaborative Innovation Plan, leading the construction of the Industrial Design Sub-Center of the Shanghai Creative Industry Collaborative Innovation Center.

In 2011, SADM secured approval to launch a master’s program in Design Studies and a doctoral program in Industrial Design, marking a major leap forward in graduate education and research. In the same year, the School established the Research Center for Design for County Development, pioneering a new model that empowered regional industrial transformation through design. That same year, SADM’s proposal for the Shanghai World Expo—“Light in Motion, a Barrier-Free City”—won the Outstanding Design Award, while ECUST became the only university to receive the prestigious Best Organization Award.

In 2009, Professor Cheng Jianxin was elected Vice President of the China Industrial Design Association during its first Fourth Council plenary session, further strengthening SADM’snational influence and academic standing.

In 2008, Professor Cheng Jianxin, Dean of the School, and Professor Kiyoshi Miyazaki, Vice President of Chiba University (Japan) and visiting professor at SADM, were honoredamong the “100 Designers and Design Institutions Influencing the Development of Design in Shanghai.” Professor Miyazaki was the only foreign expert included.
