Primary Research Areas: Rural landscape planning and design, conservation and development of traditional settlements, urban furniture and industrial product design.

Professor Zhang has authored 12 monographs and published over 100 academic papers in core journals namely City Planning Review, Architectural Journal, and Planners. Among these, including 20 papers published in CSCI, over 50 CSSCI-indexed articles, and 9 were SCI-indexed. Some of the papers have won Second, Third, and Honorable Mention awards in National Youth Urban Planning Paper Contest four times over. He also received an Excellence Award in Jin Jingchang Foundation Urban Planning Paper Contest (2009) and China Industrial Design Decade Outstanding Academic Paper Gold Award (2012).

Professor Zhang has led four projects funded by NSSFC and NSFC, including one project supported by the Major Program of NSSFC. He also led one project funded by Humanities and Social Science Fund of Ministry of Education, two projects from Shanghai Philosophy and Social Science Key Project Fund, and five ‌Provincial and Ministerial Level Vertical Projects.

Professor Zhang has spearheaded over 150 horizontal research projects, which includes over 100 projects specifically focused on rural planning. Under his leadership, numerous projects have been honored with awards from the Ministry of Housing and Urban-Rural Development, as well as various provincial and municipal authorities. Among these rewards, the Conservation Plan for Nangge Ancient Village, Yueqing City, Zhejiang Province, which he led as chief designer in 2006, receiving both the Second Prize for Excellent Village and Town Design from MOHURD (Certificate No. CZ-05-7-4) and the Second Prize for Excellent Village and Town Design of Zhejiang Provincial.
