Program Overview

The Design discipline was established in 1984 and began enrolling master's students in 2000, making it one of the earliest programs in Shanghai to be granted the authority to confer master's degrees. The discipline boasts a highly experienced faculty team and is equipped with specialized classrooms and experimental centers.A Scientific and Artistic Academic Committee has been established, supporting the construction of a collaborative research and development platform and state-of-the-art laboratories. These include labs for virtual reality, human-computer interaction, user experience, 3D interactive imaging, and 3D printing.  in the creative industries and distinguished by interdisciplinary integration, the discipline leverages the university's strong background in science and engineering to focus on social applications and cutting-edge research. It embraces the convergence features of the information age by , aiming to cultivate talents with a rigorous academic attitude, mastery of scientific methods, critical thinking, and innovation capability.Graduates find employment in government agencies, educational institutions, research organizations, state-owned enterprises, and private companies.  design studios, brand enterprises, or internet companies. Their interdisciplinary background and practical abilities provide them with a competitive advantage. Some graduates continue their studies or pursue teaching and research careers, enjoying broad employment prospects.


This degree program encompasses six major research directions: Theories and Methods of Industrial Design, Environmental Art and Planning Design, Visual Communication and Brand Building, Systemic Service and Design Management, Intelligent Interaction Design, Cultural Creativity and Cultural Industry Studies.


Teaching Philosophy 

The core teaching philosophy of this program includes the following four aspects: (1) the integration of science and art, leveraging the university’s background in science and engineering to foster innovation awareness; (2) moral education and talent cultivation, incorporating ideological and political education to enhance students’ sense of responsibility; (3) the integration of industry and education, establishing a collaborative system that links government, industry, academia, research, and application to e the transformation of outcomes; (4) aesthetic education in the new era, integrating traditional culture and exploring the digitalization of intangible cultural heritage to enhance humanistic literacy.  


Teaching Achievements

The program has received the First Prize for National Teaching Practice Achievements and the First Prize for Key Project Achievements from the Ministry of Education. Faculty and students have won numerous awards in domestic and international design competitions, including international gold design awards, selection for the “Shanghai Design 100+,” and the First Prize at Milan Design Week. Through industry-academia-research collaboration, the program has participated in brand innovation and regional product design, developing over 300 products that have been well received by local governments. Social practice initiatives have involved rural revitalization and targeted assistance, demonstrating a strong sense of professional responsibility.
