Jointly established by academic researchers and industry leaders, in cooperation with the National and Shanghai Interior Decoration Industry Association, the Institute focuses on residential mode, residential decorative art, environmental design, residential creative culture, urban development and culture, etc., and has built a large-scale industry-university-research base.
The institute has developed four research sectors:
Research on Characteristic Towns and Homestays: Exploring models for new characteristic towns and rural homestay tourism. This includes studying the history, culture, and lifestyles of towns and villages, as well as the planning, design, and development of modern tourism products and peripheral industries. The research adopts a systematic design perspective to address renovation and development of existing settlements.
Research on Urban Environmental Renewal: Focusing on architectural and micro-environmental improvements, the institute integrates interdisciplinary expertise to create innovative urban spaces that drive industrial development.
Research on Urban Residential Space: Conducted in collaboration with Rongxin and the Shanghai Interior Decoration Industry Association, this research explores trends in residential space design, including intelligent living environments, productized residential solutions, soft furnishings, and the cultural dimensions of residential and urban life.
Research on Urban Symbolic Culture: Drawing on disciplines such as semiotics, philosophy, art, psychology, and architecture, the institute conducts interdisciplinary studies on urban symbolic culture. Key topics include commemorative urban architecture and facilities as well as Chinese environmental symbol systems.
